Now You Can Track the Bitcoin Mania Bubble in Augmented Reality

You love augmented reality (that's why you're here!), but some of you also love cryptocurrencies, most popularly known in one of its forms as Bitcoin. So you might be wondering why you can't you find two of your favorite emerging technologies together in one app. Take heart, early adopter — now you can.

Created by Los Angeles-based developer Bryan Edelman, Bitcoin AR (only available for iOS) is about as simple as it gets when it comes to AR apps. But if you've been following the frenzied excitement around the increase in Bitcoin value over the past couple of weeks, despite its simplicity, this is a tool you'll get a good bit of use from.

The app's main function allows you to track the value of various cryptocurrencies as they hover in real space, represented by the logos of the various cryptocurrency brands.

Users get an array of 15 cryptocurrencies to choose from, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Monero, ZCash, Ripple, IOTA, NEM, Dash, Lisk, Neo, Litecoin, and others.

And if you're just getting your feet wet with cryptocurrencies, the app also provides helpful in-app Wikipedia-sourced information for each cryptocurrency, allowing you to get a quick snapshot of when each was launched, as well as its general background in the cryptocurrency space.

So no, if you don't already own any Bitcoins, this won't help you snag any on the cheap in the pursuit of fulfilling your geek billionaire dreams. But if you're completely obsessed with cryptocurrency (as everyone from the mailman to your local grocery store cashier seems to be this month), this is a quick and fun entryway into a growing space that will likely be one of the most important tech stories in 2018 — next to AR, of course.
